The Search Begins...
Today, on February 1st, 2022, the American Veterans Archaeology Recovery (AVAR) started their surveys to locate the Battle of Medina.
We’ve received some great press, but in the course of interviews you never really get a chance to acknowledge everyone who came before and whose work is making AVAR’s work possible.
So, to that end, here’s to the work of Ted Schwarz, Robert Thonoff, Dan Arellano, Joe Alvarez, Robert Marshall, Bruce Moses, Kay Hindes, Art Martinez de Vara, James Bernsen, and the many, many others whose work has brought the scholarship of the battlefield to where it is today.
Here’s to the resources donated by the American Battlefield Trust, Howard Energy Partners, Jefferson Bank, John Dickson, and almost two dozen other private donors to make these surveys possible.
Here’s to the community around Southside High School who have kept the memory of this battle alive for more than 200 years.
And here’s to our commitment that this is only the beginning of search. We’ll be back after these initial three weeks of field work to recruit veterans from the LOCAL community to engage in our second season of surveys later this year. If you’re a veteran and interested in participating in future surveys, you can find an application on AVAR’s website here.
If you’re interested in learning more about the project and able to donate to our work, you can check out our GoFundMe page here.
